Since the first prototypes of the camel pack, widely credited to Michael Eidson of CamelBak in 1988, the concept of hydration in a backpack has come a long way.
Pioneering these portable water systems in the late 80's and early 90's, it seems unlikely that the company could have imagined that the systems would become so widely used. Originally, it was just a way to complete bike races with out stopping for a water break. Athletes in other sports began to see the benefits and soon adopted the camel packs. Today these hydration packs are used in everything from motor cross to adventure racing.

While hydration packs are widely discussed with regard to sports, the applications have far exceeded the confines of pass-times and friendly competition. Exploration and combat have been added to the uses of hands free hydration. The military and even NASA see the value of these hands-free hydration units. Today, I want to discuss one model in particular.

Of the 62 CamelBak hydration packs available, the Transformer represents the coolest of the packs we have reviewed to date.

The Transformer is a highly adjustable backpack and hydration system. Lets start with the only color choice. Unlike the fun packs offered by CamelBak, this work horse comes in the smart color they could have chosen - black. It is a low-profile pack with additional storage compartments for everything you could need.

The hydration system itself is top quality and provides an expected 3 plus hours to a full-day in the elements. The 3. 1 Liter bladder is constructed using the durable Water Beast material, the Omega easy-fill wide-mouth fill port, and screw-in leak-proof cap, so its tough enough to withstand the abuse of serious fieldwork. Hydration delivery is state-of-the-art featuring a combination of the CamelBak patented Big Bite valve, and Hydrolink exit and drinking port, insulated tube, and even a flow control system.

One of the unique qualities of this pack is its ability to transform with additional storage compartments. The total storage volume is 982. 4 cubic inches. That leaves over 790 cubic inches of storage, even with the hydration bladder at capacity. New Balance 595 Mens That's 13 Liters of additional carry storage. There are dual side pockets for ammo, clips, and other mission essentials. There are also separated slot pockets for even more organized storage.

The pack is equipped with a comfortable harness system, an air channel back panel for comfort, and is equipped with an orange pack cover for those times you may want to have higher visibility.

All-in-all we think this is one terrific field operations pack.
